- Description: I wrote this years ago, on a different journey. It came back to me crossing a different kind of desert, at six knots.

I wrote this a few years ago when I was on a different journey. It came back to mind when crossing a different kind of desert at 6 knots.

*Four hundred kilometers in forty years.*

*Ten kilometers per year, twenty-seven meters per day.*

*A march so slow, one forgets the direction.*

*And with the direction, the destination—still so far away.*

*And with the direction, slavery in Egypt*

*The crossing of the Red Sea*

*The sea closing in on Pharaoh’s chariots*

*The manna appearing on the stones.*

*The vast desert*

*An uninhabitable place, an uninhabited place.*

*A call to movement, to passage*

*A place of crossing that forbids stillness.*

*Advance one foot after the other, one step at a time.*

*Twenty-seven meters per day.*

*Two steps per hour, for one must try to sleep,*

*In the burning heat of day or the chill of night.*

*The desert, land of all mirages.*

*A furnace conjuring deceptive images by blending the elements,*

*A furnace conjuring deceptive images by blending emotions.*

*When physics and the spirit unite to confuse,*

*How reassuring the gleam and nearness of that metal calf.*

*Stopping on the side of the path to adore the beautiful image,*

*Forgetting the land of bondage we left behind*

*And the promise of a land flowing with milk and honey.*

*The desert, land of thirst.*

*A thirst that nothing ever quenches,*

*A fragile balance, an irreconcilable tension.*

*Life evaporating through every pore of my skin.*

*My life—fragile, rare, and precious—*

*The life you return to me*

*When I extend my hand to you*

*And you fill my empty cup with living water.*

*The desert, land of silence.*

*What is there to talk about?*

*The next step?*

*A trivial endeavor, ill-suited to chatter.*

*Choosing silence to dwell in silence,*

*To remember the land of servitude*

*And the promise of a land flowing with milk and honey.*

*To receive the word you give me:*

*“I remember, and I still hope.”*

Original version
